We offer an amazing 6:1 student/teacher ratio.  State standards are 18:1.  Recent research shows major benefits of small class size.  Everybody knows the life long benefits of preschool.  Benefits that include better grades in school to lower felony rates as adults.  But now, there is no longer any argument about whether or not reducing class size in the primary grades, including preschool, increases student achievement.  The research evidence is quite clear:  It does. Harvard University Professor Frederick Mosteller called the Tennessee STAR study one of the greatest experiments in education in United States history.  This study fallowed students up to third grade, randomly assigning these students to one of three types of classes: small, regular, and regular with an aid.  With four years of data, researchers found that: Students in small classes significantly out performed the other students in both math and reading, every year at all grade levels, across all geographic areas.  The STAR study provides compelling evidence that reducing class size, particularly for younger children, will have a positive effect on student achievement overall. In the "Lasting Benefits Study," students in small classes up to grade 3 continued to outperform their regular class peers at least up to grade 8. How large are the gains?  An incredible three/fourths of a year ahead! Shortly after kindergarten starts, the teacher will start her assessments of her students.
